Update on Construction at Kendal at Oberlin

Moving Forward, Phase II of Kendal's Master Plan

by Terry Kovach,

Admissions Associate

Kendal cottages along the Meadow Pond

Phase II of Kendal's Master Plan, is well under way. Kendal at Oberlin is enhancing community spaces and is building 12 additional cottages for retirement living. These beautiful and spacious homes will be placed around the large pond on the northwest corner of Kendal's campus. The site plan for Phase II is below. All twelve of the cottages have commitments and will be occupied in the spring of 2009. Click here view a Flash slide show of recent construction activity.

Kendal's newer cottages feature spacious rooms, vaulted ceilings in the living rooms, plenty of storage, large utility rooms with energy-efficient appliances and more. Like all of our cottages, they are built in such a way to maintain One of several kitchen finish options and protect the natural beauty of the space that surrounds them. Sizes range from a one-bedroom cottage at 987 square feet to a two-bedrom + den deluxe cottage at 1,849 square feet. The Phase II cottages will wrap around Rock Pond, such that each living room will overlook the water.

The land has been cleared and Heavy equipment moves large trees at the Phase II construction site. work on the infrastructure (like utilitiy connections) is completed. Several large trees were relocated to provide screening for the new cottages. In the process of clearing the land, mounds have been built up along the back of the property to create an attractive barrier between the cottages and Main Street (Route 58). The mounds will be planted with grass and trees to minimize sound from the road. Kendal's resident Horticulture Committee continues to review these landscape plans.

Foundations for Phase II cottages have been poured, walls framed and roofing is in progress. The plan is to be under roof before winter weather arrives so that work can continue on the interior of the cottages through the cold weather season.

As we continue to move forward, we will post updates and photos of our progress. Be sure to check back here periodically. For more information, contact us in the admissions office at 1-800-548-9469 or by e-mail at admissions@kao.kendal.org.
